Christine Probes (1943-2021)

Christine McCall Probes, who passed away on November 14, 2021, at the age of 78, was a pillar of the French early modern studies community and particularly of the NASSCFL society. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, she took her B.A. from Huntingdon College in that city. Following research and study at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the Université de Strasbourg, she earned a Ph.D. from Tulane University. It was there that she met her husband, the Rev. Dr. Harold Probes, who would have a distinguished career as a Presbyterian pastor.Their marriage lasted 46 years, until his death.

Les rencontres de Psyché

Les "Rencontres de Psyché" permettent chaque année aux Amis de La Fontaine de passer une journée à la fois conviviale et savante, dans la ville natale du poète, Château-Thierry. La manifestation de cette année mettra l'accent sur les rapports entre le christianisme et la culture gréco-latine païenne dans sa vie et son œuvre, à travers un cycle de quatre conférences inédites.

Modalités d'inscription

Les personnes souhaitant participer à cette journée doivent obligatoirement s'inscrire, en réglant des droits permettant de couvrir une partie des frais avancés par l'association (pour la visite du matin, le déjeuner, le cycle de conférences et le concert du soir ; le dîner est en option avec supplément).

No Sessions for MLA Toronto — Call for Delegate Assembly and Forum Executive Committee Members

Dear colleagues,

As current members of the MLA French 17th-Century Forum Executive Committee, we write to explain why we have not yet circulated, and do not plan to circulate, CFPs the 2026 Toronto Conference. Instead, we are outlining our response to the MLA Executive Council’s recent actions.

We join our voices to oppose the MLA Executive Council’s refusal in January 2025 to allow for an open debate of MLA Resolution 2025-1 calling for the endorsement of the 2005 Palestinian BDS Call. The MLA Executive Council’s decision not to forward the resolution to the Delegate Assembly for consideration runs counter to the organization’s long-held mission and values, particularly its commitments to academic freedom and shared governance.
